Abandonment in the Latinx Community and the Struggle for Self-Identity and Acceptance

Often feeling lost and confused because of the insecurities of not belonging here or there. A search for an identity that is yet to be found but without any idea where to begin. The struggle is overwhelming and completely controlling your life. You are not alone anymore, and your journey for self-identity and acceptance can begin today.

The Abandonment created by Bicultural Stress.

As a Mexican Citizen child that was raised in the United States, I understand the struggles that come with growing up as that child. Scared, lonely, and unable to trust others or yourself. I grew up seeing the struggles my parents went through raising my US Citizen siblings and me. The difficulties parents often face because of the experience of bicultural stress only create a barrier between parent and child. There are many differences between the perspectives each has because of the experiences each receives. The beliefs and values are often conflicting between both. The challenge parents often face between raising children according to their culture and the children’s challenge of having the ability to assimilate to the new culture with ease. Communication is often sacrificed because neither can understand the challenges both are experiencing. Empathy and understanding are needed to have an opportunity to see past your own experience, whether as a parent or as a bicultural child/adult.

Feeling abandoned because you are unable to belong.

As a Bicultural child or adult, the feeling of being a misfit is a constant struggle. Your culture judges you for forgetting certain words in your native language. While at the same time, social groups are often overwhelming because translations in communication sound funny to your White peers. You often feel lonely because you can’t speak up to your family or friends. Instead, you struggle alone, hoping for something to happen that will change the emptiness you feel inside. You don’t have to continue feeling this way; make the change you need for yourself today.

Hiding who you really are and the constant fear of abandonment.

The want to be accepted often results in hiding who you are. You become what society says you should be. But you often struggle with your identity because you suppress your culture and identity to belong. Leaving you confused and questioning whether sacrificing your culture was the correct decision. You don’t have to continue hiding because you are the best part of yourself. The power is in your hands to learn how to love and accept yourself. Allow me to walk along your side as you discover the strengths that have been hiding within.
